Riverboat Discovery Cruise, Fairbanks, June 17, 2001

Arrival at the dock area for the Riverboat Discovery cruise. [800x600][1600x1200]

Now we're on the boat, Discovery III. Here's the original Discovery, parked just downstream from where we started. [800x600][1600x1200]

Rob's picture: All of Discovery I.

Rob's picture: One of the many nice houses along the Chena.

Rob's picture: Another.

Rob's picture: Another.

A sled dog demonstration at Susan Butcher's kennel, along the banks of the Chena. [800x600][1600x1200]

Rob's picture: More sled dogs.

Along the banks of the Chena. [800x600][1600x1200]

Some of the sled dogs at the kennel. [800x600][1600x1200]

Rob's picture: Some guy's floating trailer thing. Apparently he ran for Governor of Alaska and used this as a floating advertisement.

Approaching the confluence of the Chena and Tanana Rivers. [800x600][1600x1200]

There it is - the clear, blue waters of the Chena mixing with the brown, silty Tanana. [800x600][1600x1200]

And now we're sailing the Tanana. [800x600][1600x1200]

Looking down the Tanana. [800x600][1600x1200]

Still the Tanana. [800x600][1600x1200]

More. [800x600][1600x1200]

A view inside the boat. Everyone here is at least 60 years old. [800x600][1600x1200]

Pulling up to see the salmon demonstration. [800x600][1600x1200]

A salmon-catching system set up in the Tanana. [800x600][1600x1200]

The sand bars left as the Tanana changes its course year to year. [800x600][1600x1200]

They brought us ashore at a fake town called Chena Village to see some displays and to hear about Athabascan culture. Here's the riverboat docked at Chena Village. [800x600][1600x1200]

Rob's picture: The caribou pen.

Rob's picture: Athabascan hut.

One of the stops was with the sled dogs. [800x600][1600x1200]

[800x600][1600x1200]

[800x600][1600x1200]

Here's one of our guides trying on a fancy Athabascan parka. [800x600][1600x1200]

There is also a pen of reindeer. [800x600][1600x1200]

[800x600][1600x1200]

[800x600][1600x1200]

[800x600][1600x1200]

The village as seen from the riverfront. [800x600][1600x1200]

People are getting back on the boat. [800x600][1600x1200]

A building at the fake village. [800x600][1600x1200]

The boat again. [800x600][1600x1200]

Looking downstream from the village. [800x600][1600x1200]

Back on the boat heading upstream on the Tanana. Here are some pretty turbulent flows in the river. [800x600][1600x1200]

Turning back into the Chena, leaving the silty Tanana. [800x600][1600x1200]

The mixing, or apparent lack of mixing, is very interesting to watch. [800x600][1600x1200]

Rob's picture: Another really nice house, and like all of the homes along the banks, it was built by a "nice, young couple" according to our tour guide.

Back on shore, here is the sled used by Susan Butcher when she won the Iditarod. [800x600][1600x1200]

More on Susan Butcher. [800x600][1600x1200]
