Skiing Catamount - January 19, 2023

These pictures were taken with my Motorola moto g6 phone and iPad at Catamount Ski Area in Hinsdale, New York, and Egremont, Massachusetts, on January 19, 2023. I used my first Catamount Indy Pass redemption. Images are shown at a resolution of 800x600. Larger image formats are available by clicking the links below each image. There is also a set of pictures from the ride home and one picture of the weather back at home.

What I posted about the day to the NYSkiBlog: I used my Indy Pass for a Catamount day. It was my first time there since 2018, third time overall. I didn't get an early start, which is probably good, because the snow was pretty rough when I got out there around 11. I came down the NY side for the first few runs on a not-deep-enough machine-made hard-packed groomed surface with occasional chunks. I was thinking it might not be a long day. As I continued to check out the open terrain (they said 21 trails), the snow softened up but at the expense of skiing first in a mix of sleet, snow, and rain, but then in a plain old rain. The Race Run under the Catamount Quad was the best snow of the day, and one of the places I felt I could really let the skis ride and take some nice, carving turns. After lunch, I went back to try the NY side trails again and they had improved a lot. I'd have taken more runs but. the rain was really coming down by about 1:30 and it just wasn't worth staying out in it. I guess I shouldn't have been given the recent weather, but I was surprised how thin the cover was on most trails. Very thin spots were marked by patrol and many more were in danger of peeking through as the rain picked up. Hopefully the rain changes over and they don't lose trails. At this point, there's not much to push around to patch things up. I'm still glad I went. I got in some good runs and found that my new ski jacket and pants are definitely waterproof. If I paid full price for a day ticket, I would have been disappointed, but as it just cost an Indy redemption and gas/lunch money and some time (barely over 90 minutes there, 2 hours back in more weather) it was fine.
