Former Route 130, Now a Lava Road in Hawaii - August 29, 2006

This road used to go somewhere. It connected to the Chain of Craters Road in the national park. [Closer]

Now, it ends at a lava flow. [Closer]

Right there. Fortunately, the blue book told us that the road really is open and we could drive a few miles up on the road constructed on top of the new lava flows. [Closer]

There it is. [1744x1308]

It's pretty rough, but not terrible. At some points, it connected back down to undamaged sections of the road. [1744x1308]

We're approaching the current lava flow from the north. [1744x1308]

The parking lot at the end of the road. [3488x2616]

The steam plumes we saw from the other side last night. [1744x1308]

The steaming hill. If we had time and were willing to drive out on the lava road in the dark, it would have been interesting to see if we could see flowing lava on the hill after dark. [3488x2616]
