Hiking on Mount Greylock - August 31, 2002

These pictures were taken with my Olympus C2100-UZ digital camera while hiking on Mount Greylock, in Williamstown, New Ashford, and Adams, Massachusetts, on August 31, 2002.

All images are 24-bit JPEGs and should be viewed on a 24-bit display. Quality is likely to be very poor when viewed on an 8-bit display. Most images are shown at a resolution of 640x480, but are available in 800x600 and full 1600x1200 sizes by clicking on the links after the captions.

It was really foggy. This is near the junction of Notch Rd., Rockwell Rd., and the road to the summit, along the Appalachian Trail. We hiked from the Sperry Rd. campground on the Hopper Trail to get here. [800x600][1600x1200]

The sign points the way up the trail to the summit. [800x600][1600x1200]

And this is the trail. [800x600][1600x1200]

One of the trail markers. [800x600][1600x1200]

Bess, Amitha, and Rob, the day's hikers. [800x600][1600x1200]

At the summit, it was even more foggy. Here's the War Memorial. We had to be about this close to see it at all. [800x600][1600x1200]

On the way back down, we passed this pond. We passed it on the way up, too, but the fog was so dense at the time, they we couldn't see half way across. [800x600][1600x1200]

More of that pond, along the Appalachian Trail. [800x600][1600x1200]

One more view. [800x600][1600x1200]

After the hike, we took a ride out to Stony Ledge, now that the clouds and fog were starting to break up. A view into the Hopper. [800x600][1600x1200]

Another view. It's still too cloudy at the summit to see the monument and TV tower. [800x600][1600x1200]

View from the road, between the campground and the junction with the Summit Road. [800x600][1600x1200]

From the same spot, we can see Williamstown between the ridges. [800x600][1600x1200]

Zoom in on Williamstown. [800x600][1600x1200]

We also drove back up to the summit to see it without the fog. Now we can actually see the monument from more than 25 feet away! [800x600][1600x1200]

There were hang gliders taking advantage of the wind. Here are a few of them, with Adams in the background. [800x600][1600x1200]

Lots more hang gliders setting up. [800x600][1600x1200]
