While visiting a friend in Delaware this weekend, I was able to add a new stadium to my list. We went up to Philadelphia on Saturday to see the Giants play the Phillies at the Vet. We got there a few hours early and got tickets, so we took a walk up Broad Street as far a city hall. It was a long way so we took a subway back. Our seats for the game were good, second to last row in the lower deck, about half way up the left field line between third base and the foul pole. The stadium is nothing special, being one of those ugly-era concrete and artificial turf places, but it generally was a comfortable place to watch a game. The food wasn't so great and the soda guy only came around once. The hot dog quality ranks near the bottom of my list and general food selection was limited. The game itself was outstanding. My own pitcher from the OBFLB, Orel Hershiser, started for San Francisco and was given a 6-1 lead in the 5th, but he struggled and lost his chance at a win when the Phillies completed their comeback on a 2-run pinch hit home run by Kevin Jordan off closer Robb Nen. The inning before, we got to see Jose Mesa get an at bat and he actually walked and later scored. The Giants took an 8-7 lead in the 10th off Ricky Bottalico, but the Phillies fought back in the bottom half to load the bases with one out for pinch-hitter Kevin Sefcik. He grounded into a double play and the Giants pulled it off. You can't ask for a more exciting baseball game. Pictures of the trip, mostly taken at the game, are at http://www.cs.rpi.edu/~terescoj/phillies-19980801.
