Reno, Nevada - November 12-18, 2007

These pictures were taken with my Fujifilm Finepix S9000 digital camera on a trip to Reno, Nevada, and nearby places, November 12-18, 2007. The main purpose of the trip was to attend Supercomputing '07, but there was time for some exploring at the end of the trip.

Images on the pages linked here are shown at a resolution of 640x480, but many are available in full size or cropped from the originals or in half of original size by clicking on the links after the captions.

No pictures, just a long day of teaching and travel.

My first day at the conference, and just a handful of pictures from the parking garage of the Silver Legacy in the morning [3 Pictures].

Another full day at the conference, and the day's pictures are taken on the way to the conference center from downtown Reno [13 Pictures].

Thursday, November 15, 2007

The last day of the conference, and the day's pictures are from the ride to the conference center again [3 Pictures] plus a few from the main exhibition area at the conference [3 Pictures].

With the conference over, it was time to start exploring the area a bit. I had never been much to the south and east of Reno, so I chose to make a loop out that way. I left Reno [11 Pictures] and headed south toward Carson City, where I made a quick stop at the state capitol [23 Pictures]. From there, it was on through the rest of US 395 in Nevada [13 Pictures], to Topaz Lake [9 Pictures], and across the California border [5 Pictures]. I continued south on 395 through several towns (including a lunch stop in Bridgeport) and lots of nice scenery [44 Pictures]. At Mono Lake [27 Pictures], I decided it was time to cut back east into Nevada [6 Pictures]. I took Nevada 359 [12 Pictures] over to Hawthorne, where I saw part of the town and visited the Mineral County Museum [27 Pictures]. From there, it was north on US 95 along the west shore of Walker Lake [32 Pictures]. Along US 95, I passed through Schurz [5 Pictures], through some interesting terrain [7 Pictures] to Fallon [8 Pictures], then through some salty marshes [6 Pictures] to I-80 [5 Pictures]. Along I-80, I passed Nightingale Hot Springs [3 Pictures], made a quick stop in Fernley [10 Pictures], where Hillary Clinton was about to make a campaign stop, then back to Reno for the night [2 Pictures].

Saturday, November 17, 2007

This was planned as a potential ski day, but warm weather and lack of snow meant that was not an option. So it was off on another driving tour. I got on my way out of Reno by mid-morning [7 Pictures] and headed north on US 395 [8 Pictures] and into California [5 Pictures]. I turned west onto California 70 [20 Pictures], and stumbled across Plumas-Eureka State Park and the small town of Johnsville [36 Pictures]. Back down at the main highway, I went through the small town of Graeagle [8 Pictures], then south on California 89 [25 Pictures] to my lunch stop in Truckee [23 Pictures]. I had time for a quick side trip to the north shore of Lake Tahoe [45 Pictures] before heading back along I-80 [19 Pictures] to Reno [13 Pictures] for the night.

Back to the east. There are a few pictures from the ride to the airport in Reno [21 Pictures] and some from the air from the first flight [20 Pictures]. The day's travel was pretty much on schedule, putting me back in Hartford a little after 10, and home just before midnight.
