Denali National Park, June 19, 2001
Crossing the road to start our hike up the ridge across the Park Road from Eielson.
[800x600][1600x1200]
A little way up, here the view of Mount Eielson and the VC.
[800x600][1600x1200]
A bit further up, we reached snow.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Andrew and some mountains.
[800x600][1600x1200]
There's a glacier showing through the clouds over in the McKinley direction.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Andrew continues up the trail.
[800x600][1600x1200]
We've gotten higher - the VC looks smaller.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Andrew pointing out what might be a better way.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Even a bit more of McKinley's base..
[800x600][1600x1200]
This part was steep and gravely, so we turned back, as demonstrated by Rob.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Rob's picture: This is the kind of thing we couldn't climb. Given better equipment, most importantly gloves and hiking boots, it would be a lot easier. Next time.
But this view sure was nice.
[800x600][1600x1200]
A flower here in the tundra.
[800x600][1600x1200]
A ridge covered with tundra, and Andrew down below.

Rob's picture: Andrew and I on our way down. [1600x1200]
More wildflowers in the tundra on the ridge above Eielson.
[800x600][1600x1200]
From up here we can see a lake near this river.
[800x600][1600x1200]
McKinley is still trying to come out. These may all look the same now, but each time the mountain really does look different. And it kept improving, so I took tons of pictures of it.
[800x600][1600x1200]
More wildflowers on the ridge.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Still more.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Looking toward the Park Road back to the main entrance.
[800x600][1600x1200]
We got to see this little guy. Ground squirrel?
[800x600][1600x1200]
Apparently there are rocks just West of here on the Park Road.
[800x600][1600x1200]
Rob's picture: I believe it. [1600x1200]
