Driving through North Carolina - August 12, 2002

I-40 in North Carolina from the Tennesee line to Asheville.

Arrival at the North Carolina line on I-40. [800x600][1600x1200]

And they extend a nice welcome. [800x600][1600x1200]

But the road is still narrow and winding. [800x600][1600x1200]

And then it started to rain on approach to the first tunnel. [800x600][1600x1200]

The sun was out and the road dry at the second tunnel. [800x600][1600x1200]

At the rest area/welcome center, the GPS thought we were at elevation 2400. We didn't go very high, but the road was plenty interesting. [800x600][1600x1200]

View from the rest area. [800x600][1600x1200]

More from the rest area. [800x600][1600x1200]

Out of the mountains and approaching Asheville. [800x600][1600x1200]

Bat Cave? And I thought its location was a tightly-guarded secret. It's off I-40 in Asheville! [800x600][1600x1200]

Tunnel Rd. in Asheville. [800x600][1600x1200]

I guess this is why they call it Tunnel Rd. [800x600][1600x1200]

Buildings in downtown Asheville. [800x600][1600x1200]
