Two Hailstorms in Williamstown - June 17, 2002

These pictures were taken with my Olympus C2100-UZ digital camera in Williamstown during two hailstorms on June 17, 2002. Most pictures are from the first storm, which came through around 7 PM. The hail in that one was larger (up to around quarter size, mostly nickel) and it was still brighter out. The second storm around 8 PM was not as strong, but was still a hailstorm.

All images are 24-bit JPEGs and should be viewed on a 24-bit display. Quality is likely to be very poor when viewed on an 8-bit display. Most images are shown at a resolution of 640x480, but are available in 800x600 and full 1600x1200 sizes by clicking on the links after the captions.

In addition to the pictures below, I have one quicktime movie from the height of the first storm:

  • 19 second Quicktime video (6.4 MB)

    The first storm. [800x600][1600x1200]

The hail is bouncing all over. [800x600][1600x1200]

It's almost covering the ground in places. [800x600][1600x1200]

It bounced all the way in by my patio door. [800x600][1600x1200]

The hail clogged the drains, so water is coming out at the joints. [800x600][1600x1200]

As the storm moves away, a rainbow. [800x600][1600x1200]

The other side of the rainbow. [800x600][1600x1200]

Around front, 10 or 15 minutes after the storm, there is still hail stuck in the bushes. [800x600][1600x1200]

The hail cooled the ground enough to cause some ground fog to form. [800x600][1600x1200]

    More ground fog. [800x600][1600x1200]

    Around 8 PM, a second hailstorm! [800x600][1600x1200]

This one had more rain mixed in. The first one was pretty much all hail. [800x600][1600x1200]

Big pile of hail at the bottom of the drain. [800x600][1600x1200]

Nasty looking clouds over the mountain as the storm rages. [800x600][1600x1200]
