St. Lawrence River Trip - July 7-9, 2024

This short trip gave us the chance to visit a part of the St. Lawrence River valley, near the 1000 Islands, where we had not spent any time previously. Pictures were taken with my Fujifilm Finepix HS50 camera, my iPad, my Google Pixel 6a phone, and Cathy's iPhone. Pictures are linked from within the trip report below. Most are scenery and signs, with a few people pictures brought together on this separate page.

Sunday, July 7 - Amsterdam, New York, to Augusta, Ontario

We got on our way by around 8:30, and after filling up the Q5 in Fultonville, we started north. Our first brief stop was at Blue Mountain Lake [3 Pictures], then a bit longer one (with doughnuts) in Tupper Lake [7 Pictures]. We left Route 30 there, and headed northwest through Canton [2 Pictures] to Ogdensburg [2 Pictures]. In Ogdensburg, we got a late lunch at the Phillips Diner, then crossed the St. Lawrence into Canada [4 Pictures]. It was late enough that we could go right to Dewar's Inn to check in and relax a bit [Picture]. A bit later, we decided to take a ride upstream to Brockville to walk the rail tunnel [13 Pictures], explore the waterfront area [7 Pictures], and get some dinner (aiming for Canadian, ended up at a Swiss Chalet). Monday, July 8 - Augusta, Brockville, and Prescott, Ontario

Our full day in the area started with a morning on the decks at Dewar's [3 Pictures], a midday visit to Prescott with some poutine from Tim's Fish and Chips and Poutine and More and a lot of walking around the waterfront [13 Pictures]. We drove out to walk up the lighthouse at the Battle of the Windmill Historic Site [11 Pictures], drove a loop through the small town of Johnstown by the international bridge, and visited the local grocery store to pick up some items that were either cheaper in or only available in Canada to bring home [Picture]. While out by the 401, we continued north a bit to see what was going on with a place marked on the online mapping services as "Sparkle City" but found absolutely nothing of interest there or anything bearing that name. We returned to Dewar's for the afternoon [5 Pictures], and eventually went back into Prescott for dinner at another Canadian chain: Chuck's Roadhouse. [5 Pictures from the roads]

Tuesday, July 9 - Augusta, Ontario, to Amsterdam, New York

We stayed around Dewar's for a while in the morning [3 Pictures], and left a little before checkout time. We proceeded right over the bridge back to the U.S. and took a drive along the waterfront in Ogdensburg, stopping a couple times at parks on each side of where the Oswegacthie River empties into the St. Lawrence [6 Pictures]. After those stops, it was time for lunch, and we made the very good decision to stop at the Smugglers Cafe for a tasty outdoor waterfront meal [4 Pictures]. After lunch, it was mostly just a drive home along a different route. From Ogdensburg, we mostly followed New York 812 to Lowville, but did one side trip on 184 and 58. Out of Lowville, it was right down 12 to Utica, where we did some shopping at Pulaski Market, then the Thruway home and another gas stop in Fultonville (all one tank!). A very successful trip.
