Skiing West Mountain - February 28, 2023

These pictures were taken with my Motorola moto g6 phone at West Mountain in Queensbury, New York, on February 28, 2023. I used an Indy Pass redemption. Images are shown at a resolution of 800x600. Larger image formats for some images are available by clicking the links below each image.

Here's what I posted about the day to the NYSkiBlog. I spent a few hours at West this afternoon, using my first Indy Pass day there (and 7th redemption overall on the season), and marking my first visit there since January 2020. They only got about 3 inches in this underachieving storm, but all after grooming, so it made things really nice. I didn't get on snow until just after noon, but there were still plenty of fresh tracks and apparently the main lift to the summit had a delayed opening. The surface skied into a nice packed powder with (very light) skier traffic. The exception was the Face where snow guns were going in what were marginal snowmaking temperatures at best, so things got a little heavy and sticky there, especially by comparisons to the great surfaces everywhere else. The Northwest area was open, but only Mach and Bannister. Midway was closed with snowmaking (giant whales) and AOA looks to have enough snow to be skiable but was closed. Various glades looked skiable too, but were all roped off. Cure looked very nice but was closed as fencing was being put up on the sides of the trail, meaning only greens and blues open. As we got to mid-afternoon, the lingering light snow became more of a freezing mist, and then the busloads of kids arrived, so that was it for the day.

Not as much new snow as hoped, but some nice conditions anyway. [Larger: 2048x1536]

The snow guns near the base were annoying. It wasn't really cold enough and it got sticky. [Larger: 2048x1536]

An old favorite.
